For once, we dont need to talk aboutTaylor Swift.
(Okay,maybeAnti-Hero deserved a Best Music Video slot, but alas.)
In fact, most of the biggest artists of the past year and change showed up on the list.
Yet there was still plenty of room for surprises.
(Also, this being the Grammys, people are surely finding reasons to be mad.)
Here are the biggest takeaways.
Okay, are we being punked?
Because this is actually a pretty inoffensive (dare I say good?)
slate of top nominees!
Its also definitely one of the most in-touch and youngest slates of top nominees the Grammys have put together.
If theres a major flaw, its the lack of rap and country in the Big Four.
But asthe last few yearshave shown, this couldve been a lot weirder.
In other words: Only one male artist, Jon Batiste, was nominated for each of those awards.
But its worth something.
Though sadly,F2F did not get a rock nomination.
(Hope he enjoys the special pre-show party with H.E.R.
and Brandi Carlile.)
Morgan Wallens and Luke Combss hits dont hit.
A banner year for country on the charts isnt necessarily going to lead to awards hardware.
In fact, of the 12 longest-running Hot 100 No.
On one level, this means the Academy just doesnt like Wallen and Combs as much as Nashville does.
More broadly, its yet another sign of countrys waning power in the top categories, especially at apost-committeeGrammys.
Cyrus racked up six nods, in the generals and pop categories.
cracked Best Music Video, andfourwere nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
So with all those nominations, why isntBarbie The Albumin AOTY?
Guess she really didnt need to think of a third line.
Is PinkPantheress too weird for the Academy?
I had my doubts about Boys a liar Pt.
2 slipping into Record or Song of the Year.
Instead, she came up empty-handed.
Rap finds some balance.
Rock could learn from it.
Meanwhile, aside from boygenius and Rodrigo, the rock category continues to look pretty stale.
Also, both fields continue to share one glaring issue: a gender imbalance.
Women dont make up a majority of the nominees in any single category.
Its a bit of a disappointment for a category that had just been heating up.
So far, things look pretty similar.
The other two, Metro Boomin and Daniel Nigro, had flashy, well-respected projects this year.
Who the fuck is Robert Glasper?
Whoeverhe is, hes nominated against Chris Brown yet again in Best R&B Performance.
Remember H.E.R.?
But dont call it a snub she had just one song eligible, her NBA-finals anthem The Journey.
Is A&W the first SOTY nominee to use the word whore?
Sorry, Recording Academy, for ever doubting you.
