That was a rough one.

Sam was an endearing kid who inspired an instant, sisterly devotion from Ellie.

His life echoed elements of Joels own past and maybe his future.

Remember: The credits end with silhouettes of Joel and Ellie for a reason.

Endure and Survive begins and ends in two distinct varieties of chaos.

and Fuck you, FEDRA!

as they fill the streets.

And, besides, Henry knows hell never be forgiven for what hes done.

She knows shes going to kill them all.

(When youre done, burn the bodies.

Its faster, shell later tell Perry, her second in command, played by Jeffrey Pierce.)

Henry and Sam wont be easy to find.

Its a big city, and a door-to-door hunt takes a lot of manpower.

Edelstein has found a kind of safe house for them in an apartment buildings attic space.

But they cant last there for long withmaybe11 days of food.

Thats just the way he sounds!

He has an asshole voice, Ellie frantically says in an attempt to neutralize the situation.

And the situation does calm down.

In Joels mind, it should end there, You ate.

We didnt kill each other.

Lets call it a win-win and move on.

But Henry knows a way out, and that makes him valuable.

Also Sam makes Ellie laugh, and that counts for something.

Down they head into tunnels Henrysmostlysure will be safe.

And, perhaps surprisingly, they are.

This is why hes the most hated man in Kansas City.

That and the fact that the man he betrayed was Kathleens brother.

But could Henry live with letting Sam die, even if it was for the greater good?

Would Henrys loss be greater than hers?

Another complication: Kathleens brother wanted her to forgive.

She chose not to and, in choosing not to, accomplished what her brother could not.

Your brother was a great man.

We all loved him, Perry tells her.

But he didnt change anything.

And, in the end, they sort of do.

Ellie even proposes a continued partnership and roasts Joel for his gruffness before he can object.

Then a shot rings out, bringing their celebration to a close.

But Joel quickly realizes hedoeshave to kill him since hes not giving up.

Then, fortunately for Joels friends, Joel takes the snipers place ahead of Kathleens onslaught.

Maybe they would have, as unlikely as that seems.

But first Kathleen and Henry have a conversation.

They die all the time.

Do you think the whole world revolves around him?

That hes worth everything?

This is what happens when you fuck with fate.

Its not an argument thats easy to dismiss or the words of a mindless villain.

As vindictive and cruel as she is, Kathleen has a point.

She just doesnt have long to make it.

It ends the way it ends, she says.

Sam, in particular, would have died on the battlefield if not for Ellie.

Hes been bitten, and though Ellie tries to heal him with her blood, its no use.

Infectious Bites

This was an excellent episode but also a tough one to watch.

All that death and betrayal was for nothing.

But its also hard to imagine Henry making any other choices.

In his mind, hehadto save his brother, even if it meant fucking with fate.

In the end, its a narrow focus that undoes Kathleen, too.

Kansas City goes beyond failing the test.

Its essentially wiped out of existence by the episodes end.
