Fortress of Solitude strikes me as an instant improvement over the first episode ofShrinking.

Its funnier, more emotional, and more complex.

Without the burden of establishing the shows premise, theres time to hang out with the ensemble.

Now shes willing to make more of an effort if Jimmy is.

Its an interesting peek at Lizs insecurities.

I like seeing Paul in a gentler mode here than at work, where hes almost frustratingly private.

And in general, I appreciate this look at Alices support system.

Alice tries to take Pauls advice, bringing chicken sandwiches home.

It leads to a tender scene when Jimmy sets Brian off again after refusing to get real with him.

Jimmy wont let his patients work through their feelings on a natural (albeit long) timetable.

These things take time, and both of them will need to accept that.

I have to say, the occasional racial humor isnt really landing for me.

This time its This Life.

There is a subtle payoff to Gabys water-bottle gift from Coin Flip when we see Paul using it.
