You shoot in chronological order so you might change your scripts on the fly.

She just went with the flow.

But she never changed her character.

The narrative adapted to the characters evolution.

She was supposed to talk about how shed been abducted as a child.

I said to her, You will now say instead that you were abducted byaliens.

And I remember she went, What?

And then that changed the remaining four episodes.

It does seem like that might change things a little.Id always been very interested in science fiction.

And then in episode three, I went to her and said, Now you know kung fu.

And so we hired a trainer and got all these fight scenes going.

That was also not really in the original plan.

What did Netflix think about all this?

Your daughter, Lola Corfixen, plays Mius nemesis, Rakel.

Why did you cast her?Rakel came very late in the process.

Wed been using a coffin in episode three and four as an aesthetic prop.

But then the question was, who should I cast as the stepsister?

I was about to shoot it, and I couldnt find anyone.

Is it easier to direct actors that youre related to?Its actually much more sensitive.

Our youngest one, Lizzielou, was in the show too.

She plays the ultimate Miu at the end of episode six.

And shes like, No, Im going to stand right here.

I cried a lot on set out of proudness.

To wake up Rakel, Nicklas stabs his mother with a sword.

InOnly God Forgives, Ryan Gosling also stabs his mother with a sword.

What is it with you and stabbing mothers with swords?I would leave that to the shrinks.

Certain things you dont want to know.

What was the thinking behind those shots?Today, everything is so fragmented.

Were insecure about our content.

I think doing the opposite is more productive.

And yet when we see content, its the exact opposite.

It should be like educating children.

So that was the thinking behind the 360 shot.

I always thought it was a limited series.

Had you intended to make a second season?No.

That could only be a self-contained piece.

After 13 hours I had nothing left to say about America.

And 13 hours is almost two seasons.

Three seasons if you look at television nowadays.

But thats up to the heavy heads at Netflix.
