Being the Chosen One is a horrific reality no one would wish for.

Four teenage outcasts with unusual abilities (surprise, its magic!)

form a coven, magnifying their powers.

Article image

Its a touchstone of cinematic escapism and doesnt give you a break for one second.

The characters are being brutally traumatized, and so are you.

If an innocent girl can be overtaken by demonic forces, why couldnt you?

Allow us to convince you.

This movie has everything: Toni Collette shouting, miniature dollhouses, and tongue clicking.

(Dont blame us if you begin to recoil at the sound in real life.)

Just know the hype is real.

Thats really all we can tell you to avoid just how twisted this film gets.

Even creepier, its loosely based ona real story.

The Conjuring

Whats a horror movie oeuvre without a film based on a real-life haunting?

Armchair Satanic Panic scholars will love it.

Sorority Row

At the intersection of RushTok and slashers livesSorority Row.

A group of girls accidentally kill their sorority sister in a prank gone wrong.

Instead of reporting the crime, they cover it up.

The kills are gruesome, the one-liners are borderline camp, and it never once takes itself too seriously.

Shes kind of a misandrist, but wed argue for good reason.

Cross out, Needy.)

The Shining

Another Stephen King adaptation.

Another classic youve probably quoted without even knowing it.

Come for the satisfyingly creepy ending, stay for Shelley Duvall.

Just dont watch it while youre staying at a hotel.

Its a gateway sci-fi horror thats also melodramatic to a fault, but scary nonetheless.

Were discussing the latter.

This plot also revolves around mysterious space pods that land on Earth and invade California.

Its suspenseful, sad, and just as scary as the original.

Its been done time and time again, but theres something special about the self-referentialThe Cabin in the Woods.

The scares are good, but the metacommentary is a critical part of the movie, too.

Its what will keep you talking about it long after the credits have rolled.

But, maybe, sleep with the lights on.
